- Even if you don’t like Amrican Idol’s (totally genius) style of appealing to the lowest common pop cultural denominator, you have to respect the fact that everybody else does. The show, now in its 6th season, scored insane numbers during thiz year’s premier. On Tuesday night 40 percent of Amrican TV-watching homes were tuned in, though many people complained that the first round of contestants were disappointing, and the judges nastier than ever. Last night’s audition session was better, with fewer singers obviously going for the amusingly awful card and more actual talent, but Randy is quickly proving himself to be the new lead asshole on the judging pannel. He’s meaner than Simon!
- Who doesn’t need another Johnny Cash album. On March 6th an extensive collection of Cash’s much-loved Gospel recordings - Cash: Ultimate Gospel - will reportedly be released.
- Jay Richardson, son of the legendary rocker The Big Bopper, is apparently having his father’s body exhumed. Richardson Sr. famously died in the February 3, 1959 place crash that also killed Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, and his son hopes that the autopsy performed on his dad’s remains will answer questions about The Big Bopper’s last moments alive. Some have hypothesized that the Bopper survived and was going for help, others have suggested that a gun went off onboard, causing the crash.
- Sometimes, if you’re XTC’s Andy Partridge, you ring up your old bandmate Martyn Barker and you record a jam record, just for fun. The results of just such an impromptu recording session will be released in April under the name Monstrance. It’s not an XTC reunion but we’ll take it.
- You can apparently own Frank Sinatra’s last car for about the cost of one of those hybrid SUV things. It may be an ‘85 LeBaron but $39,000 is not much to pay for a car full of Frank Sinatra’s DNA.
