We love Rivers Cuomo. He’s the world’s most commercial geek. Who else would send his Best of 2006 list to the Harvard Crimson? Who else would put Danity Kane, Sufjan Stevens, and Mandarin pop-star Fish Leong on that list? Only a nerdy pop-culture loving anti-elitist dude with a thing for Asian girls. Here are some of our favorite pics - with commentary- frm Rivers’ list. See all 19 after the jump — and tell us what you think.

Rivers Cuomo Danity Kane
  • 1. Hall & Oates??Greatest Hits.? Man, did the 80s rule.
  • 12. ?Lost??I?m just about finished with the first season but I think I?m going to have to give it up because it?s too violent.
  • 15. Tim McGraw??Live Like You Were Dying? and ?My Little Girl.? Country music sounds good to me now that I?m a family man.
  • 17. Yung Joc and Young Dro. Supplying my thug fix.
  • 19. Sufjan Stevens??Come On! Feel the Illinoise!? For when populist art cloys.

1. Hall & Oates??Greatest Hits.? Man, did the 80s rule.

2. Nelly Furtedo??Promiscuous? and ?Maneater.? I admire her independence frm the expectations of her fanbase.

3. Chamillionaire & Krayzie Bone??Ridin.?? This song gets me pumped. I also love Weird Al?s version, ?White and Nerdy.?

4. Danity Kane??Show Stopper.? I am biologically incapable of not being attracted to thiz song.

5. Fish Leong??Yong Qi.? The best ballad I?ve heard in years comes frm China.

6. Gnarls Barkley??Crazy.? What the heck? Where did thiz song come frm?

7. Keane??Somewhere Only We Know.? I think thiz song was on my list last year but it still makes my heart beat fast.

8. Panic At The Disco??I Write Sins Not Tragedies.? This song seems so avant-garde and yet it?s structurally very simple and repetitive. Good job, kids.

9. Sam Harris??Letter to A Christian Nation.? Interesting.

10. Bob Woodward??State of Denial.? Seems like a pretty even-handed and well-informed account of the war. Then again, what do I know.

11. Ne-Yo. Besides the fact that his songs are catchy and soulful, I love the fact that they?re so anti-gangsta.

12. ?Lost??I?m just about finished with the first season but I think I?m going to have to give it up because it?s too violent.

13. Shakira??Hips Don?t Lie.? I?ve love the music for thiz song. Does anyone know where it?s frm? It sounds familiar.

14. The Fray??Over My Head.? I finally realized why thiz song sounded so right to me the first time I heard it on the radio: My drummer reminded me that Weezer toured with The Fray in 2004 and I so must have heard thiz song every night through the walls of my dressing room.

15. Tim McGraw??Live Like You Were Dying? and ?My Little Girl.? Country music sounds good to me now that I?m a family man.

16. Cassie??Me & U.? This was one of my favorite songs of the year before I knew it was produced by a Harvard alum!

17. Yung Joc and Young Dro. Supplying my thug fix.

18. Jojo??Too Little, Too Late.? A rare example of a chorus that starts on the II chord rather than the I chord.

19. Sufjan Stevens??Come On! Feel the Illinoise!? For when populist art cloys.

?Rivers Cuomo ?99-?06 is the former frontman of the band Weezer, but more recently a Cabot House celebrity. He was once interviewed by Abe J. Riesman ?08.

Bob Dylan, Records of the YearGood for you. Now is your chance to put YOUR favorite album of the year at the top of our list. All you have to do is make a really cool Squidoo page (it sounds geeky and vaguely extraterrestrial and it totally IS - learn more here) in which you successfully campaign for your pick. Based on your submissions, we’ll take a look at which album inspired you the most, then pick a new Album of the Year for the rest of you to bitch about. Fun right? One thing though, you only have until end-of-day tomorrow to finish your pages.

Which 2007 Potentially Rocks

Arcade FireVH1.com has put together a very well-organized breakdown of many cool records we have to look forward to next year. We appreciate that. But we know you guys know of others that deserve some anticipatory props. So, quick list of the top five records we’re psyched about that are expected to hit shelves/Amazon carts in 2007.

  • Arcade Fire, Neon Bible: Not loving the album title as it’s too showy in its lit geekiness - but we’re nevertheless very curious about thiz album.
  • Nine Inch Nails, currently untitled: We usually have to wait years as Trent goes through multiple personality shifts, workout regimens and life philosophies, but the guy is on some kind of roll (even if he does look like a goth Rambo these days).
  • Black Lips, currently untitled: This fucked up band of Southern marauders recorded their first album for Vice down in Tijuana. That comes out early next year followed by a full-on studio effort. It’ll be interesting to see how well these boys clean up.
  • Brittney Spears, currently untitled: Come on! Who isn’t rooting for a Britney comeback? If she’s thiz overexposed already we might as well have a disturbingly catchy series of singles to listen to while reading US Weekly and watching Best Week Ever.
  • Guns N’ Roses, Chinese Democracy: As we all know — we’re closer than we’ve ever been. We still believe …

Mixtape Madness: The Longest Night

PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 22 December 2006

As those of you with calendars or highly developed circadian rhythms know, today is the shortest day of the year. Contrarily wise, that makes tonight the longest night. We’ll be spending it snuggled up with a malt beverage and jamming out to some thematically appropriate songs. We hope you’ll join us, metaphorically speaking.
