In terms of sheer star power, Los Angeles lost out to an unlikely competitor: Broward constituency, Florida.
The Anna Nichole Smith saga continued to rage on both coasts Tuesday, but as a closed-door paternity hearing took place in California, the day's real battle--complete with appearances by ..xx ....ll drama's major parties--played out in Broward constituency Circuit Court.
The Florida hearing was the first of what's expected to be several court dates regarding Smith's next of kin: both Howard K. Stern and Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, are fighting for the legal status, which will grant one of them custody of Smith's remains and give them the right to determine where to lay Smith to rest. Stern is angling for a Bahamian burial while Arthur wants Smith's body brought back to Texas.
Stern and Arthur, and their respective embattled legal teams, appeared in the Florida courtroom alongside Stern's paternity nemesis, Larry Birkhead. |

Altman Honored in Manhattan

Just as star-studded as a Robert Altman film was the ensemble that came together Tuesday to pay tribute to the late director, whose films often read like a who's-who of seasoned talent.
"There's a hilarious new movie in preproduction up in heaven," Tim Robbins, who starred in Altman's landmark film industry satire, "The Player," as well as in "Short Cuts" and "Ready to Wear," said during a public memorial held at the Majestic Theater in Manhattan.
"He's watching the people on stage, yes, but there are other cameras lurking around the theater today [examining] the subplots, the subterfuge, the silliness, the whispered comments, the backstage preening."
All of which sounds like fodder for the iconic filmmaker who, as New York Times film critic A.O. Scott wrote shortly after Altman died Nov. 20 frm complications of cancer, "thrived on the shapelessness and confusion of experience" and made his films "buzz frm the dangerous thrill of collaboration." |

Completely Parted: Carmen & Dave

Luckily for Carmen Electra and Dave Navarro, they were able to part ways without having to invoke that "til death" clause.
A Los Angeles judge signed off Tuesday on the estranged couple's divorce, officially splitting the former "'Til Death Do Us Part: Carmen & Dave" duo into separate entities.
Electra filed for divorce on Aug. 10, citing the celebrity special, irreconcilable differences, as the reason for the breakup. Her move came a little less than a month after she and Navarro announced that they had "amicably separated" and a day after it was reported that her musician hubby was dating porn star Jenna Jameson.
But despite the fact that Electra and Navarro were a high-profile pair, their uncoupling went off relatively smoothly, at least as far as the legal system is concerned. They had no children and agreed that there was no community property to split up, and neither petitioned the other for spousal support, according to court documents obtained by E! Online. |

O.J. Simpson's win-loss record is getting a little hazy.
A Los Angeles judge ruled Tuesday that all residuals that go to Simpson for past movie and television appearances be turned over to the family of murder victim Ron Goldman, a decision that led both parties to declare victory.
"Last year Simpson's royalty checks frm all of his movies were less than 39 cents," Simpson attorney Yale Galanter said after court. "They got kicked to the curb again. Every door they're banging on gets slammed."
Galanter was gallantly referring to the Goldman family's decade-long attempt to collect on the $33.5 million wrongful-death judgment awarded to them and to the family of Nicole Brown Simpson in 1997. The Goldmans have maintained that they have received next to nothing frm Simpson, who blew a huge chunk of his fortune on legal expenses but has a $4 million NFL pension that the courts can't touch. |

James Brown is finally going to be buried. Somewhere.
The dueling factions left behind when the Godfather of Soul died on Christmas Day put aside their differences for at least one day to reach an agreement as to the late entertainer's final resting place.
Tomi Rae Hynie, Brown's longtime companion who has referred in court documents as the singer's "omitted spouse," and Brown's six adult children met up in a South Carolina courthouse Tuesday, where a judge appointed a special administrator to oversee the handling of Brown's estate.
The iconic performer's offspring had been looking to have Brown's longtime lawyer, Buddy Dallas, and two other men removed as trustees, accusing the trio of harboring a conflict of interest that prevented them frm managing their father's affairs properly. They also alleged that some of Brown's assets were in danger of being "lost or dissipated or stolen." |

Daniel Baldwin finally set foot in court. And to mark the momentous occasion, a judge scotched an arrest warrant for the legally challenged actor.
The former "Homicide" star was on the business end of a $25,000 arrest warrant after skipping two previously scheduled hearings. But Alec's younger bro turned up in a Newport Beach Criminal Court Tuesday, accompanied by his attorney and the supposed victim of the alleged crime, and was arraigned on charges of stealing an SUV.
Baldwin, 46, pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of receiving stolen property and unlawfully taking a vehicle.
The next hearing was scheduled for May 1. |
