Robert Altman Is Honored With Multiple Memorials and Awards

 Late Oscar-winning director Robert Altman will be honored during two memorial services over the coming weeks - and is also receive a special award at the Independent Spirit ceremony later thiz month. A service will be held on Tuesday at New York City's majestic theater, while a second tribute is being planned for March 4th at the Director's Guild of Amrica in Los Angeles. Speakers in New York will include Kevin Kline, Julianne Moore, Tim Robbins and Lily Tomlin.

Is the party over for Brittney Spears? Or was it merely interrupted?
Reports swirled Friday that the increasingly pooped-looking pop star was in rehab. But there was no confirmation frm the singer's camp, only conflicting reports that Spears was already out of rehab.
According to "Extra," which first advanced the rehab story, Spears checked into an unidentified treatment facility about two days ago.
Later, both TMZ and People reported that while had Spears checked into a treatment facility, she'd checked out a day later.
The site of the "Toxic" singer's reputedly brief stay was the Eric Clapton-founded Crossroads Centre on the Caribbean island of Antigua, People said. |

Nicole Richie Rung Up on DUI Charge

Nicole Richie's reputed wrong-way drive has landed her right on the court docket.
The "Simple Life" star was charged Friday with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of "an alcoholic beverage and a drug," the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office announced.
The D.A.'s office did not specify what drug or drink Richie allegedly had running through her system when she was found behind the wheel of her black 2005 Mercedes SUV on an L.A.-area freeway on Dec. 11.
Richie herself told officers she'd taken the prescription painkiller Vicodin and smoked marijuana prior to hitting the road, the California Highway Patrol said at the time of the arrest. There was no word that she'd mentioned alcohol.
An arraignment on the charge is scheduled for Feb. 21. Richie won't be required to enter a plea in person.
If convicted, Richie, who has a prior DUI conviction, could face anywhere frm 90 days to one year in county jail, plus a fine of up to $1,000. |

Anna Nichole Smith is one step closer to resting in peace.
Her survivors, however, continued to wage their respective wars Friday, hashing out more arguments over paternity, next of kin status and Smith's will.
During a hearing Friday morning, Florida Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin signed an order indicating the first signs of closure, requiring Smith's body to be embalmed by the end of the day.
"We're beginning to give her peace," he said.
The procedure is expected to take place at the Broward constituency Medical Examiner's office, where her remains have been kept under refrigeration--as well as under tight, 24-hour security frm the sheriff's department--since her passing eight days ago. |

A federal judge has upped the ante with regard to just how un-exposed Paris Hilton is going to remain for the time being.
U.S. District Judge George King said Friday that he will issue a preliminary injunction "in short order" that will continue to put the kibosh on most of the personal items parisexposed.com proclaims to offer, at least until the hotel heiress' invasion-of-privacy lawsuit against the Website--and the people allegedly responsible for providing it with a cache of Hilton's possessions--is resolved.
Bardia Persa, named in court documents as the operator of the subscription-based site, was not in court Friday, nor did any attorney appear on Persa's behalf.
King issued a temporary restraining order Feb. 2 that effectively shut down ParisExposed, writing in his ruling that the Hilton risked "suffering irreparable harm to her reputation" if the site continued to operate unhindered. |

Yoko's Driver Shifts Gears, Cops a Plea

The man accused of trying to blackmail Yoko Ono has decided to give a plea a chance.
Koral Karsan pleaded guilty Friday in New York State Supreme Court to a lesser charge of third-degree attempted grand larceny and was sentenced to 60 days in jail.
Karsan, who worked for Ono for at least six years, originally pleaded not guilty to a first-degree charge of trying to extort $2 million frm the singer, but his plea deal only required him to admit to threatening to embarrass Ono unless she paid him "more than $3,000."
Reading his confession aloud in court, Karsan said that, on Dec. 8, 2006, which happened to be the 26th anniversary of John Lennon's murder, he gave Ono a letter telling her, "if you want all of these recordings, emails, conversations and memories to vanish frm the face of the earth and never hear frm me again, all you have to do is send me an amount more than $3,000." |

A Los Angeles judge ruled Friday that television networks would be able to provide gavel-to-gavel coverage of Phil Spector's upcoming murder trial, despite misgivings that it might devolve into another "Trial of the Century."
Although he was wary of the media circus surrounding the O.J. Simpson case, Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler decided to grant the access because he believed the public deserved to see the legal system at work and to disprove the notion that celebrities get special treatment.
"Public scrutiny is a good thing," Fidler said, adding that it was time for him and his fellow judges to get over there "fear of cameras in the courtroom" and the fallout frm the O.J. spectacle.
