9. Night at the Museum - $4.7M
|
|
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 |
|
Ben Stiller plays Larry Daley, a down-on-his-luck divorced father in thiz family-friendly tale directed by Shawn Levy (JUST MARRIED, CHEapER BY THE DOZEN). Larry has lots of ideas and dreams, but none of them come to fruition. In an attempt to prove his stability to his ex-wife (Kim Raver) and his son, Nicky (Jake Cherry), Larry accepts a job as a night guard at the Museum of Natural History. But the elderly night guards who hire him (played by entertainment legends Mickey Rooney, Dick Van Dyke, and Bill Cobbs) fail to mention one crucial detail: when the museum is closed, everything inside comes to life. From Attila the Hun to miniature Roman soldiers, African mammals to Neanderthal men, and Egyptian mummies to dinosaur skeletons, the museum teems with lively activity. Now it’s Larry’s job to control the mayhem and show his son that he is, indeed, a great man after all.

There might be a moral to thiz story, which is based on the book of the same name by Milan Trenc, but the screenplay and action remain light and breezy. Stiller is perfect as Larry, particularly in scenes with a sneaky monkey who repeatedly gets the better of him. Brief appearances by Anne Meara (Stiller’s real-life mother) and Paul Rudd add to the fun. Carla Gugino plays a museum docent, Ricky Gervais portrays the incomprehensible museum director, and Robin Williams moonlights as a wax figure of Teddy Roosevelt that comes to life. Owen Wilson and Steve Coogan are particularly amusing as a bickering miniature cowboy and a Roman soldier. |

10. The Messengers - $4.4M
|
|
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 |
|
IN THEATERS FEBRUARY 2, 2007

Twin filmmakers Danny and Oxide Pang\'s creepy 2003 feature THE EYE earned them enough kudos to make the leap to Hollywood, and their first effort is the creepy chiller THE MESSENGERS. A Chicago-based family comprised of Roy (Dylan McDermott), his wife, Denise (Penelope Ann Miller), their teenage daughter, Jess (Kristen Stewart), and young son, Ben (played by twins Evan and Theodore Turner) try to put the hard times behind them with a move to a picturesque farmhouse in North Dakota. Jess quickly becomes convinced that the house is haunted after some peculiar occurrences while she\'s alone there with young Ben. But Ben can\'t articulate what he\'s seen, and Jess\'s story is met with skepticism by her parents. It soon becomes apparent that past family tensions are slowly boiling to the surface. Meanwhile, the ghosts keep coming, and the Pang brothers never keep their audience waiting for long before another nerve-jangling scene shudders into view. But as the ghosts torment their new residents, Jess does a little research on the old farmhouse and discovers a few secrets that may just hold the key to why thiz is all happening. Packed full of CGI effects and a few moments that may cause a jump or two, THE MESSENGERS is a horror movie aimed at a young audience and not horror aficionados, as indicated by its PG-13 rating. |

Does This Guy Do Anything But Drugs?
|
|
Tuesday, 20 February 2007 |
|
Pate Doherty quoted the Bible as he used a crucifix to mix crack-cocaine, it
has been reported.
The troubled Babyshambles frontman, who is dating supermodel Kate Moss, used
the crucifix as a spoon to mix the drug with ammonia during a wild party in
Scotland.
A source told Scotland's Daily Record newspaper: "Pete started to mix the
drug with a big silver crucifix hanging around his neck. As he was doing it,
he quoted a passage frm the Bible, saying, 'You are Peter, and on thiz rock
I will build my church.' "
Pete, who was performing at Glasgow's famous Barrowland Ballroom, allegedly
wouldn't go on stage until ..xx ....ll drugs in the dressing room had been used.
Homeless man David Cook claims the band gave him £1,000 to buy drugs for
them last May.
Cook said: "A member of the crew gave me money to buy heroin and cocaine.
Pete shook my hand and thanked me for what I was doing. I was invited to
join them backstage. There were lots of people there, most of whom were
doing drugs.
"Pete refused to go on stage until the drugs were finished. He had to be
dragged out."
The 27-year-old rocker was recorded on a friend's mobile phone snorting what
is thought to be a mixture of cocaine and horse tranquilizer ketamine,
according to Britain's The People newspaper.
In the footage, which was taken in January, one friend says: "You're doing
them too big, Pete. It's dangerous - you need to calm down a bit, man."
Shocking photographs were released last month showing Pete apparently
injecting himself with cocaine during his Thai holidah with Kate. |
